Artist Note

Beyond Circuit

Leather, paint, sand, tea dye mixed media, Chun Sei Ryun

                    

For my artwork, I worked with a mixture of leather, paint, sand, shells and green tea.

Similar to when I worked on the ChoSun Women Series where I used the style of photo-etching on leather, I felt that the maternal love from the women was as soft as the buttery leather, where the unique personalities and perspectives of these women were shown.

The circle has no end and no beginning.  The circle in essence keeps rotating endlessly and is eternal. Back in the day paper was only used as a canvas, ever since the beginning of human history up until the digital era of today.  However, nowadays leather is used as well as paper as canvases.

Countless dots represent time and tangled lines like a ball of thread complete a surface.

The heart of the microcosm within our body, which cannot even be touched or seen, was painted with abstract colors.

 Those billions of stars in the great universe were expressed by the installation on the wall as if we were able travel between them by a space shuttle.

말없는 시

말없는 시(詩), 찻잔이 녹아든 화폭

한가위 둥근 달을 올려다보며 찻상 앞에 차인 홀로 앉아 있다. 찻잔에 따라진 연녹색 찻물 속에는 숨겼던 그리움이 떠 있는듯하고 무심코 잔을 비우는 고요한 몸가짐에선 무위(無爲)의 기다림을 보는 듯하다.

“등불이 되어서

등불 같은 꽃이 되어서

바다를 바라보며 기다린다.

내 삶의 반은 그리움이다.

새들이 낮게 나는 바닷소리 들으며

누군가 기다리는 시간은

이 작은 사랑은

외롭지만

슬픈 기쁨이다.

한 마리 새를 기다리는 마음으로

남아 있는 시간

그리운 잎새 되어 남아 있는 저녁은

기다림으로 타오르는 놀빛 아래

작게 불을 켠 행복이다.“

시인이 노래한 이 작은 행복을 달리 표현할 방법이 있을까. 짝을 찾아 새가 우는 것처럼 무엇인가 그리워질 때 시인은 시를 쓰고 화가는 그림을 그린다. “그림은 말없는 시요. 시는 말하는 재능을 가진 그림”이란 옛말을 굳이 인용하지 않더라도 그림이야말로 화폭에 표현된 시요 그리움을 원천으로 하는 오래된 자생의 예술일 것이다.

뉴욕에 머무는 동안 맨해튼 첼시거리에 있는 첼시웨스트갤러리(Chelsea West Gallery)에서  ‘Hommage a SooKuen(박수근에의 그리움)'이란 제명이 붙여진 전시회를 볼 기회가 있었다. 팸플릿에 쓰여 있는 작가의 말을 번역해 보았다. “내 작품에는 가죽, 페인트, 모래, 조개껍질, 녹차 잎 등 혼합재료가 사용된다. 가죽표면에 포토에칭기법으로 조선여인시리즈를 그려낼 때도 나는 여인들로부터 발산되는 모성적인 그리움을 버터처럼 부드럽게 표현하고 싶었다. 내가 마시는 차는 그리움을 표현하기에 더 이상 좋을 수 없는 재료들이다. 이런 재료들로 만들어지는 원(circle)은 시작도 없고 끝도 없다. 끊임없이 회전하면서 영원처럼 계속될 뿐이다. 가죽 표면에 찍혀지는 수많은 점들과 이 점들을 연결하는 선으로서 공간과 시간을 표현하고 만질 수도 볼 수도 없는 인체 속의 소우주는 추상적인 색채로서 나타낸다. 대우주를 구성하는 수십억 개 별들 사이를 항해하는 우주선처럼 벽면에 입체적으로 설치된 원들의 행렬을 통해 그리움을 찾는 나의 유영은 한동안 계속될 것이다.”

오프닝 리셉션에선 화가가 직접 보여주는 한국 차 시연행사도 곁들여졌다. 찻잎을 재료로 그리움을 표현하고자 한 작품들은 무엇보다 차를 좋아하는 나에게 흥미롭게 다가왔다. 장구의 양쪽 끝에서 떼어낸 가죽 판이 캔버스가 되고 우려내고 남은 차 잎을 판 위에 얹어 가죽표면에 찻물을 배어들게 함으로써 자연스런 형상을 만들어내고 마른 차 잎 위에 오일물감을 덧입히면서 화면에 입체적인 굴곡이 생겨나게 하는 기법이었다. 그러나 이러한 기법보다도 나를 더 끌리게 한 것은 화면을 구성하는 달과 찻잔의 환상적 배열, 그리고 잔에서 향기가 피어오르는 듯한 리얼리티가 전설적인 그리움으로 다가왔기 때문이었다. 나는 여비를 털어 다실에 걸어둘 작품 하나를 샀다.

대학캠퍼스를 품고 있는 고황산이 서쪽 창문을 통해 온전한 자태를 들어내 주는 경영대학 7층 연구실은 차실로서는 이상적인 곳이다. 첩첩수목 들어찬 깊은 산 속에서 명천 괴석을 벗 삼아 사는 스님들 경지에야 미치지 못하겠지만 도심 한복판에서 산을 보며 차를 마실 수 있다는 것이 얼마나 큰 즐거움인가. 나는 이 방에 퇴수재(退水齋)란 이름을 붙여놓았다. 물을 버리는 서재란 뜻이다. 이름에 걸맞게 예닐곱 평 남짓한 방의 한가운데를 기다란 소나무 탁자가 차지하고 탁자위에는 차 통 몇 개와 차 그릇들이 적당히 놓여 있다. 차 찌꺼기와 찻물을 버리는 데 쓰는 퇴수기(退水器)도 그중에 들어있고 한구석에 놓인 작은 옹기물동이 하나도 구색을 맞추어준다. 한 쪽 벽에 새 그림이 걸렸다. 기다림 가운데 시인이 느꼈던 작은 행복이 화가에 의해 그리움으로 살아난 그림을 감상하며 독서로 피곤해진 심신을 쉬게 하는데 차(茶)만한 것은 또 없을 것이다. 밝은 창과 정결한 책상이 옆에 있으면 더욱 좋고 바람이 고르게 불면서 가는 비가 외창(外窓)을 가볍게 두드리는 날이라면 금상첨화일 것이다. 소동파는 “좋은 차가 아름다운 여인과 같다(佳茗似佳人, 가명사가인)”고 했고 “미인은 좋은 차와 함께 한다(美人伴茗,미인반명)”는 말도 있다. 차상 맞은편 자리에 빈잔 하나를 더 내어놓는다. 혼자 앉아 번갈아 비우는 두개의 찻잔, 한잔은 나의 것이지만 또 한잔은 기다리는 사람의 몫이다. 기다리는 사람이 언제 당도하든 그리운 대상을 간직한 찻잔은 행복하다. 기다림이 있는 동안 희망은 언제나 그의 편이기 때문일 것이다
